This tour is mainly on paved A and B roads that are generally in good condition, however, occasionally ride on minor roads through villages and dirt surfaces that can contain some potholes and loose gravel. Distances on one or two of the days are quite long with up to 5/6 hours of actual riding.
The ride:
Week one
Depart the quaint yachting port of Gocek on the South West coast and head for the 3000 year-old rock tombs and turtle breeding grounds of Dalyan.
From here we ride north, past Bafa lake for the overnight stop in the former Greek hillside town of irince.
We visit the ancient Roman city of Ephesus – the second largest city of the Roman Empire and one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Heading up the Aegean coast we arrive at the old fishing island of Cunda for an overnight stop and the place to taste to some of the best fish in Turkey.
The next day we ride the Aegean coast to Çanakkale, where, the following morning, we board the ferry with the bikes to visit the Anzac war memorial and the annual commemorative service of Gallipoli – often a very poignant and moving visit for many Australian’s and New Zealander’s who lost relatives in the infamous 1st world-war battle.
After departing from Çanakkale we head for the old town of Bursa with the opportunity to visit the thermal baths and enjoy a traditional Turkish Bath and massage to ease away any aches and pains from the ride.
Week Two
We depart for Salihli and ride some of the very best roads Turkey has to offer the biker. Mile after mile of twisties over well-paved mountains roads and stunning scenery bring us to Sardes, one of the most important cities of the Persian empire. Heading further south, we ride more mountain roads down to the coast at Olympos.
Here we visit the 2nd century ancient port and the chance to climb to the eternal burning flames of the Chimera.
The next day we depart along the wonderful turquoise Mediterranean coastal route to the ports of Ka and take a boat to the beautiful sunken city of Simena. The end of the trip sees us head inland via the mountains to our home destination of Göcek.
